3 Ways to Take Care of Your Pool in the Off-Season

Posted on: 1 February 2019

During the off-season, you need to make sure that you keep your eye on your pool. Although your pool doesn't need a lot of care during the off-season, it does need a little attention. Here is what you should be doing during the off-season to take good care of your pool.

1. Check the Water Level

You want to make sure that you keep your water at the right level even during the winter. You need a certain level of water in your pool in order for the pumps that keep your pool clean to work properly. If you live somewhere where it stays pretty warm in the winter, you should keep your pool practically full during the winter time. If you live somewhere with freezing weather, you are going to want to keep your water line right below the skimmer during the winter months.

2. Keep Your Pool Clean

Make sure to keep your pool clean during the winter time. Keeping the walls and floors clean will prevent the growth of algae. During the off-season, you should skim and vacuum your pool to keep organic debris out of your pool. Doing this on a weekly or biweekly basis will ensure that you don't have to deal with a pool full of dirty green water when you are ready to use your pool again.

You also need to empty out the skimmer baskets, pump basket, and cleaner bags throughout the winter. Once these baskets and bags become full, they can't function correctly and help you keep your pool clean.

3. Check the Water Chemistry

Keep an eye on the chemistry of your water. You work hard during the on-season to balance the chemistry of the water in your pool, and there is no reason to stop watching the water chemistry during the off-season. When the water chemistry is off balance, it can actually damage your pool equipment.

Be sure to add an algaecide to your water to prevent algae blooms during the winter. Check the pH levels of your pool on a biweekly basis, and add the right chemicals to balance your pool out. If you stay on top of the water chemistry during the off-season, it will be much easier to open up your pool once it warms up again.

During the off-season, you need to keep an eye on the water levels, keep your pool chemistry balanced, and keep your pool clean. Doing these things in the winter months will help keep your pool in good shape for when you want to use it again.
